Sint Maarten

The 11th of November

One of the aims of ISN Amsterdam is to get international students familiar with the, sometimes slightly odd, Dutch culture. Therefore, we would like to warn you about Sint Maarten. Sint Maarten is a children’s feast day on the 11th of November, which is celebrated in most parts of the Netherlands and some parts of Belgium, France and Germany. Sint Maarten is best described as a Dutch version of trick-or-treat, minus the Halloween costumes. Typically, small groups of children can be seen going up and down the street armed with self decorated lanterns. They ring every doorbell around the neighbourhood and sing a traditional song to whomever answers the door. As a reward, they are given sweet treats! How does this impact you? Well, Even though Sint Maarten is not extremely popular in Amsterdam, it might be a good idea to store up on candy if you want to avoid disappointed faces…

Lecture by SIB:

Refugees in Fortress Europe

Monday the 3rd of November

CREA theatre

On a daily basis, we are reminded of the fate of refugees who have come to the European Union in search of a better life. The political fallout, as a result of the problems surrounding flogs of desperate people embarking on tiny boats towards the Southern Europe that refugees in Europe, can no longer be seen as a purely national matter. In this light, Europe has decided to develop a Common European Asylum System (CEAS) for 2015. During the lecture, we will assess the new dynamics of European and national asylum policy and what consequences it will have for refugees in Europe.

Student of the Week: Andreas Fiske

If you recognize this week’s winner, we’re not surprised! Andreas is one of our most loyal students, always brightening the Borrel with his bright smile and cheerful presence. As a business student at the reputable Bergen-based BI Norwegian Business School, Andreas’ bright smile is bound to help him along in later life, as he climbs the corporate ladder. For now, this young man is having plenty of fun in Amsterdam. Word has it that he has stolen the heart of many a female student. And ours right along with it, actually! He is one of the top players within ISN Footy, our very own soccer team. His performance on the field, his dedication to ISN and his undeniably chilled-out vibe are all contributors to Andreas becoming student of the week. Stay excellent, Andreas, and we look forward to seeing you around!
